Whole Grain Pizza Rolls |
The last time I made homemade cinnamon rolls, I started to think how fun and yummy it would be to make a savory version using pizza ingredients. There are endless options of things you can bake with pizza dough, but I have never tried to just make a pizza and then roll it up and slice it into pretty rolls. My daughter even helped me make these, which made it easier to convince her to eat one (she did) and it was a lot of fun to do together. They would be really great with some finely diced veggies or meat inside as well. However, if you like crispy pizza dough, this may not be the best option as these rolls are very soft and chewy. But my kids loved them and they were even great the next day, cold, out of the fridge. I am sure they would be perfect for a kid's school lunch as well. Something fun and different, and of course, well balanced and nutritious. Get rolling!
Whole Grain Pizza Rolls
one recipe of Spelt Flour Pizza Dough
ingredients |
1 C. organic pizza sauce
8 ounces shredded Italian cheese blend
1 T. Italian seasoning
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
Parmesan cheese, optional
Roll the pizza dough out to about 1/8 inch thickness into as close of a rectangular shape as you can. Cut the dough in half. Spread the sauce, then the cheese and the herbs evenly over both halves of the dough. Roll the dough up lengthwise and pinch the edges of the dough to seal the roll. Cut the dough crosswise into 1 1/2 inch wide pieces. If necessary, unroll and re-roll each piece tightly to make them as secure as possible. Place inside of a greased 8 or 9 inch round cake pan and let rise again for about 15 - 20 minutes. Bake at 350F for about 25 minutes until golden brown and puffed up. Serve warm with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese, if desired.
